THE TOWN

Capital of the Garraf district in the Barcelona region of Spain, it's a town located between Barcelona and Tarragona, 10 km. south from the well known seaside town of Sitges, beside the Mediterranean sea. 
Has a population of more than 60.000 inhabitants and an extension of 33,5 Km2.Vilanova i la Geltrú
The economy of the city is based on light industry, fishing, service sectors and tourism(  SEE TOURIST MAP of VILANOVA )
From their union in the year 1274 of the urban nuclei of La Geltrú and  Vilanova de Cubelles promoted by the King Jaume I, Vilanova i la Geltrú has experienced a great development until ending up being the current city where they mix, sea and cultivation, art and industry, leisure, gastronomy and traditions.

HISTORIC QUARTER

You have to visit the old nucleus of The Geltrú that conserves part of the layout of the old walls, as the Portal del Nin 1; together with the La Geltrú Castle 2 (  XII centuries to the XV ) and Santa María's Church ( XVIII century ). Visits forced it´s also the Enveja Tower 3 (old tower of surveillance), as well as the Vila square  ( downtown ) 4, the Sant Antoni Abbot Church 5 (XVIII century) - pattern of Vilanova -, inside which is the image of the " Virgin of Neus " (patroness in turn of this city)     PASIFAE SCULPTURE              

Then we will lower going for a walk per their magnificent Rambla 6 (the most direct avenue in Catalonia), and we will arrive to the seafaring neighborhood,  with the fishermen´s port 8the Fish Auction Hall 9 the lighthouse 10, and the  Sant Cristòfol Hermitage 11 (reconstructed in the year 1505). We will have our before the beach of the  Lighthouse Beach 12 , and if we return on our steps and we go following the Marítim Walk 7 in all their extension, we will arrive to their modern and excellent Marinas 13. fair to their side we will find the beautiful Ribes Roges Park, authentic and magnificent balcony to the Mediterranean sea, through the Ribes Roges beach 24, and continuing with our journey will find the beaches of: Sant Gervasi 25, that of the Prat of Ibersol and the Llarga beach, this last makes of frontier with the neighboring municipality of Cubelles.

CULTURE / HISTORY

One should visit the Victor Balaguer Museum 14 (1882-84), the Railroad Museum 15, the Cabanyes Farmhouse16 (with their Monumental Tree, the "Pi Gros" 17), Can Papiol 18 (ancestral homestead of one of the well known families of Vilanova in the XVII and XVIII centuries), theRIBES ROGES TOWER Roig i Toquès seafaring curiosities Museum 19 (with their surprising carp "Juanita", the only fish of the world that drinks from a jug !!), the Air Center Museum 20 (aeronautical museum), the  Sant Joan's Tower 3 (medieval fortification that has to one side the chapel of Sant Joan), the Ribes Roges Tower 22 (XIX century) on the seafront and the Adarró Ruins 23 (Iberian-Roman town populated from the 4th century B.C. to the 4th century D.C.).

TRADITIONS

Vilanova and their inhabitants live their festivals and traditions in a way participativa and open to all, where the Societies and Entities of Vilanova are their maximum exponent, always with the help of their citizens, to be able to offer the best thing in each event, conserving the most ancestral traditions.  The Main festival week

The festivals begin with the Tres Tombs (The three turns in January 17 parade of carriages thrown by horses, representing as formerly the objects and people were transported), they continue a month following with the Carnival that they begin on Saturday with the Dance of Shawls, (Official begin of the Carnival) , on following Thursday with the infantile merengada (dessert sweet with the help of milk that the children are thrown each other ). On Friday comes Carnestoltes King (the "king" of the carnival) with their " arrivo "(arrival) .They continue on Saturday in the afternoon with the arrival of the "Caramel" (the "candy" is the children Carnival King) , and the one paraded by the streets of the city of the Moixó Foguer (naked and covered character totally of feathers that  goes appearing and disappearing of the interior of a great box), and at night the adults with theis disguises . On Sunday is the "Comparses" day (people go for couple and they throw sweets -almost a 100 tons !!- to the multitude).On Monday is the "Vidalet Day" (children's carnival), and the Carnestoltes Choirs , on Tuesday is the " Vidalot Day"(the adults leave disguised in group and they throw grains of corn and barley on people).And to finish on Wednesday is the sardine funerals (it is the simulation of the death of the Carnestoltes King !!) , after 12 days of popular festivals."GIANTS" OF VILANOVA

The last week of the month of June takes place the Week of the Sea in the seafaring neighborhood, with a group of activities related with the sea and their men and women, and June 29 takes place Sant Pere Festival (seafaring party with procession for the coast of the fishing crafts and blessing of these ships). 

The Main Festival Week is August 5 (the virgin´s of Neus festivity)

From the XIV century Vilanova celebrates your Fair of the month of November (Multisectorial Fair), this contest in the course of the time has gone by thousand and an incidents, but the Fair continues existing for and for the city.

GASTRONOMY  or the art of the good one to eat

- If you want to see the recipes of these plates you make "clik" on their behalf. -

The most famous foods are the " xatò "(the endive is the vegetable main character, to which cod and tuna are added in brine, not salted, anchovies and olives.XatòThe personality of the plate resides in the sauce (the "xatò"),that he gets ready with romesco peppers, almonds, hazelnuts, garlic and vinegar, everything it dive and bound in the mortar with oil. It is a typical plate of the carnival, which is accompanied with different omelettes , and it is finished off with a forced dessert: the meringue.And with such a reason he takes place every year the call "popular xatonada". The "all cremat" , is a stew of fishermen for which diverse fish are used, abundant garlics that allow to toast, tomato and potatoes).The "sipia a la bruta" ( cuttlefish to the brute ), the "verats del Vicenç" ( mackerel ), and the "bull de tonyina" (the one boiled of tuna) they are other typical plates of the kitchen of Vilanova.

Vilanova i the Geltrú is earth of wines. The cut-off marine of the district cultivate of wines of the Penedes that so many and so good wines take place. A cut-off one that makes arrive until their vineyards the aromas and breezes of the Mediterranean, of this way to their wines a different, more festival touch.

And in pastry they are typical the meringues, tadicional and carnivalesque, and the " llunes " (moons) of Vilanova, (a kind of cookies) modern, golden and traveling, sweet badge of a city that pursued their reflection always, in the surface of the sea or in a glass of champagne.
